The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane
PT. Gramedia Pustaka Utama
By Kate DiCamillo
Fiction/Young Adult Novel
This beautiful story, started with the introduction of the main
character, Edward Tulane. Edward, being a porcelain rabbit doll, thought
himself as a very magnificent doll. He was owned by a ten years old girl, named
Abilene Tulane. As a doll, Edward felt nothing, even to his owner who loves him
very much. One night, Abilene’s grandmother told her a story about a princess
who can’t love just like Edward Tulane, at the end of her story time, Abilene’s
grandmother whispered to Edward that she was disappointed in him.
One day, when
Abilene’s family and Edward were on a cruised to England, accidentally, Edward
was thrown into the sea. Edward was stranded on the depth of the sea and for
the first time, Edward felt fear. It was long before Edward was saved by a
Fisherman named Lawrence, and here began the journey of Edward Tulane, the
rabbit doll that learnt to love as he lost all the people that he love. And, it
was not a short journey.
Bull the tramp and
his dog, Lucy. Little boy named Bryce and his little sister named Sarah Ruth
are the people that had taught him about love and had to be taken away from him
cruelly.
In this novel, Kate
DiCamillo sent her message in a very beautiful form. The journey of Edward
Tulane was told with an emotional scene that will make everyone who read
it feel sympathy for the doll, as he kept being separated by the ones he
loved.
As a young adult
novel, this book tries to teach about love to young adults in such a unique
way. It taught people that, it is no way you can learn about love without being
broken hearted.
Although, some
weaknesses could be spotted in the novel Such as the repeated plot in the story
where Edward will be separated from his owner and then found by other people.
And, I also feel, the development of the story was too fast, without much
details told.
It was a good novel that I really
recommended for people to read. Its heart-warming story may bring you to tears
and this novel also reserves an important message about love that can be learned
by people.
